biography
António Quintino, born in 1988, grew up in a musically inclined family, although no professional musicians were among them. He taught himself to play the guitar and accordion, occasionally performing with his father.
In 2004, António began studying electric bass at JB Jazz School in Lisbon under the guidance of Gustavo Roriz and Francesco Valente. The following year, he took up the acoustic bass, studying with Yuri Daniel, Nuno Alan, and Demian Cabaud. Later, he enrolled at the Superior School of Music of Lisbon (ESML), where he learned from musicians such as Pedro Moreira, Nelson Cascais, Afonso Pais, and Bernardo Moreira. He also attended masterclasses with renowned artists like John Taylor, Lee Konitz, Dan Weiss, and Ohad Talmor. Representing the school on various occasions, António notably received the Outstanding Musician Award at the S. Luiz Jazz Fest in 2011. He later pursued private lessons in New York City with Matt Penman, Joe Martin, Ian Froming, and Ben Street. Over the years, he participated in numerous workshops and masterclasses with artists such as Danilo Perez, Mulgrew Miller, and Steve Nelson.
On October 8, 2011, António premiered his first big band composition, Tout n’est pas blanc et noir, with the Hot Clube Jazz Orchestra at the Great Hall of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, featuring guest soloists Susana Santos Silva and João Mortágua, and conducted by Pedro Moreira.
